Welcome Future Instructor:

Here at Galaxy Dance School, we believe in giving aspiring and competent instructors the opportunity to create their own success.  Whether you teach dance or fitness, you may have the right qualifications to develop your own program, without the added expense of renting a studio and paying for music rights, liability insurance, utilities, and other such costs.

Our pay structure is designed to reward a successful program, based upon a sliding scale, paying as much as $50 per hour.  Galaxy has an established reputation of offering classes over a wide variety of styles, and where popular classes are rewarded.  Unfortunately, many classes fail, for one reason or another, to attract or retain students.  Galaxy will make every effort to create the right opportunity for your class to succeed.  Everything else will be up to you.

If you are interested in this opportunity, we will provide the materials to get you started, and step-by-step instructions.  Here is how it works:

Decide what class(es) you believe you would be good at teaching, all the time, year after year.  Yes, it’s hard to believe, but true dance and fitness instructors just can’t get enough of the whole participation and instruction thing.  They like what they do so much, that it’s almost all they want to do.  You make your decision based on which forms of dance or fitness are for you, so that you are prepared to immerse yourself in the instruction.

Look at the schedule of dance and fitness classes offered at Galaxy online at GalaxyDanceSchool.org.  Consider what time slot and day would work best for the class you have in mind, Saturday mornings included.  Few try classes on Friday due to low attendance, but, hey, that might be an opportunity.  If you see classes already offered which you want to teach, consider working with an existing instructor as an understudy or starting a similar dance on a different day.  Try to think of the big picture.  If you teach something no one offers, it may just be a matter of educating the public and building your numbers in a difficult time slot.  Self-confidence and determination make it happen.

Once you’ve decided what you want to teach and when you want to teach, you’re ready to develop a class curriculum.  Yes, we’ve found that successful instructors have some form of method to their madness.  Attached are forms to lead you through the process.  Go to each page and print the page to fill out.

Form I.  Course Information.  Pretty self-explanatory.  Put down as much as you can, including who will be your substitute(s).  Galaxy may assist with our pool of instructors.
Form II.  Instructor’s Course Outline.  Write your central goal in one sentence.  Work from the class description to get this.  Then list specifics objectives on how you will obtain the goal.  Examples: warm-up exercises, partner holds, step sequences, positions.  Its a break down of how you were probably taught and how you plan to teach, listed separately.  The bottom of the sheet gives you some techniques to use.
Form III.  Class Instruction Guide (or Lesson Plans).  What will you be doing on each of the class days?  Add more sheets if 4 spaces aren’t enough.  This is a breakdown of what you will be doing each day of class, so, you need to decide how many sessions are needed to complete your class.  Students enroll to complete something.  You need to give them something to complete.  Also, students may want to give personal dance performances at a Galaxy Showcase during the year.  Don’t keep teaching the same thing each week and expect them just to stop coming when they’ve had enough.  This is a formula for failure.  (Exception: fitness classes usually have a lot of repetition.)  This form is also used to assist a substitute instructor should you be unavailable for a class.
Teach Tips.  Here a partial list of techniques to use with explanations.  This expands on the list of suggestions on Form II.  Few dance and fitness instructors are schooled in how to educate.  This will help you get started.

You’re now ready to make your own decision on how you can best serve yourself and Galaxy Dance School.  Good luck, and let us know if we can provide further assistance or advice.

Respectfully,
G.P. “Buzz” Avery, President
Board of Trustees
