Kids' Class Descriptions

 

Pre-Ballet - Frances

Pre-Ballet is for 2-3 year olds who can't wait to start dancing! While it may take dancers a couple of weeks to get used to it, students must be able to stay in the classroom for the full 45 minutes. The class utilizes songs and games to introduce the fundamentals of ballet. Students also exercise coordination skills, learn classroom etiquette and practice rhythm and musicality. Steps include ballet basics such as, plie, releve, passe, pique, arabesque, 1st and 2nd positions, hopping, skipping, galloping and walking on tip toes. Students must be in ballet clothing and wear ballet shoes. Parents can watch classes through observation windows.

Ballet I - Frances

Ballet I teaches the fundamentals of classical ballet to students 4-7. The 45-minute class will include a mix of focused, traditional exercise and educational games. Students will work on proper alignment and posture, positions of the feet and arms, jump and turn preparation, rhythm and musicality. Classes will follow a classic ballet class format: warmup, barre work, stretches, center and across the floor exercises, choreography and reverence. We will take breaks (when earned) from traditional exercises to play games such as Red Light Green Light (a balancing exercise), Freeze dance and others. For Ballet I, students need a leotard, tights and ballet shoes. A ballet skirt is optional.

Ballet II - Frances

This class focuses on proper alignment and technical development. Students will warm up, develop technical strength through barre work, work on flexibility, petit and grande allegro, pirouettes and choreography. Students are expected to stretch and practice regularly at home. Students should wear a leotard, tights and ballet shoes; a ballet skirt or ballet shorts are optional.

Ballet & Jazz 8-18 - Maranda 

Ballet & Jazz takes the two building blocks of dance techniques and introduces them together for ages 8 through 18.  This class focuses on alignment, technique and flexibility.  Students will warm up, work on flexibility and choreography.  Students are expected to stretch and practice regularly at home.

Ballet/Open Level (Ages 7-13) - Frances

The focus in this class is on Ballet technique, proper alignment, flexibility and body conditioning. Activities include warm-up, barre work, extensive stretching, across the floor technique practices and learning of choreography. Students will learn a performance piece and are welcome to participate in Galaxy Showcase performances. Students ages 7-13 of any level are welcome in this class. All are expected to work very hard. The hour class will build on basic ballet positions and steps by adding the component expression. Students will learn to listen to the music and to move smoothly through their steps. They will begin to explore the types of movements that characterize ballet. Classes are always taught with bio-mechanics in mind - we will learn to practice ballet only in a way that is healthy for our bodies. Class will follow a classic ballet class format: barre work, center work, across the floor exercises, and reverence. Ballet students need a leotard, tights and ballet shoes. A ballet skirt is optional.

Break Dance - Andrew
Energetic students are encouraged to take Break Dance. They will have a blast in this 45 minute, very upbeat class. Every week, students will warm up, stretch, practice new steps across the floor and add on to a dance. Students will strengthen isolations, learn new rhythmic patterns, increase flexibility and strength and gain confidence as a performer. Students need to wear comfortable clothing that allows free movement, nothing too baggy, supportive sneakers and a smile.

Creative Movement - Frances 
Children ages 2-4 will love practicing basic movement skills! Students will sing songs and play games as they work on jumping, balancing, stretching and dancing. Creative Movement is Mondays and Fridays at 9:00 AM - the same time as Zumba!

Hip Hop - Andrew
Hip Hop students will increase agility and strength while learning beginning-intermediate hip hop and jazz moves. Class is one hour. Students will have a long warmup, where simple new steps will be introduced quickly, isolations will be practiced and stretches thoughtfully executed. Across the floor exercises will include kicks, turns, leaps and free-styling. The dance for Hip Hop II will include strength-building floorwork. Hip Hop students should wear supportive sneakers and comfortable clothing that allows free movement and is not too baggy.

Mommie & Me - Frances

For toddlers ages 2-3 with mothers of any age. Sing, dance and play alongside your toddler in Mommie and Me classes. Toddlers strengthen coordination and balance skills, develop muscular strength and practice classroom etiquette. Students learn the basics of ballet and creative dance through fun, engaging songs and games. This class is meant to transition youngsters into attentive, respectful students. Parents help by supporting the child in the classroom and encouraging independent activity.
