Description:  The name "Contemporary Dance" describes a range of techniques and styles used in classes, workshops and dance choreography. Contemporary dance was developed in the early 20th century as a reaction against the rigid techniques of ballet. Pioneers such as Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham searched for ease of movement using the body's natural lines and energy, allowing a greater range and fluidity of movement than conventional dance techniques.

Contemporary dance is characterised by its versatility: contemporary can be danced to almost any style of music, or united with other dance forms to create new styles of movement. Contemporary seeks to work with the natural alignment of the body, and is therefore safe and accessible for beginners. At the same time, the ease of movement promoted by contemporary dance technique allows experienced dancers to push new boundaries of body movement.
Class will consist of:

Warm-up (pilates, release, stretches).
Center floor modern techniques.
Traveling phrase across the floor.
Ending combination.

The contemporary techniques used are Limon and Release.

ELLEN BARTEL is known locally in Austin as a notorious “dance rabble rouser.” In 2008 the Austin Chronicle “Best of” poll dubbed her a “dance mobilizer” and a “dance phenomenon” for spearheading the Big Range Austin Dance Festival, the first in Austin since 2000.  Ellen has also choreographed for theater, fashion shows, a Domino's Pizza television commercial, and has collaborated with artists from multiple disciplines. She has danced in 20 original works by Austin choreographers including eight seasons with Ariel Dance Theater. As an instructor, Ellen has been teaching modern dance for a decade, most recently at Tapestry Dance Academy.  While an M.F.A. in Dance graduate student at the University of Texas, Ellen will continue to produce Dance Carousel, and Big Range Austin Dance Festival, participate in monthly Butoh improvisations at Salvage Vanguard Theater and direct Spank Dance Company.
DANCING TOGETHER
Times: Mondays and Fridays, 7:45-10:00 PM
Cost: $7 per person, multi-dance cards available
Web: http://dancingtogether.org/

Leave your shoes off and free your spirit; join the family of dancers known as Dancing Together.  Two-times each weekday evening, the group meets for 1 hour & 45 minutes of creative dance.  While dancing "together" in unison and surrounded by other dancers, each dancer creates his or her own style.  Whether you choose to dance with a partner or alone, the music moves the spirit into creating a dance step unique to each individual.
After a warmup of 30-45 minutes, an opening circle is formed to allow the Guides to welcome and orient the dancers.  The Guide may tell a story or create ideas for the listeners to consider during their dance.  Then comes the dance in the form of a wave.  The beginning is slow and easy, soon building to a fast pace, eventually ending in a softening to relaxation.  A circle is then reformed to allow dancers to reveal their experiences if he or she wishes to share.  Last come community announcement.

TEACHER BIOGRAPHY: Amber (see web-site for full Bio)
In 2007, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Amber found her passion!  To her surprise it was pole dancing!  She found and took a class at the Mariana Lagarreta Pole Dance Studio, then continued for three months to study the art, falling in love with the body- awareness and empowerment that pole dancing provided. Continuing to improve her skills, she auditioned and became a dancer/choreographer for Blue Lapis making her a professional aerialist. She continues to dance for the Company but still holds Pole Dancing as her true passion. In April 2010, Amber completed her Pole Dance Instructor Certification (PDIC) Levels 1-4 along with her CPR certification.
Amber’s ultimate goal is to be an example and leader in promoting pole/aerial dancing as a respected, professional sport and dance form. As a performer, she tries to make pole dancing a tasteful, beautiful show of sensuality and art.  She believes that it has never been the apparatus itself that has been the catalyst for negative attention, but more of the ways in which it is customarily performed.  Pole dancing can be as sexual as you want it to be, but so can any other form of art or dance.

KB Pilates       Instructor: Kaitlyn
